Embodied Lucidity

Part 1 Project 2024

This project is a small-scale cocoa production facility that interacts with scent, touch, and noise to emphasise the lucidity of the senses, forming a multi-sensory experience of cocoa that can aid learning about sustainable cocoa practices and innovations. Taste is the typical way of experiencing cocoa, but the project ‘Embodied Lucidity’ aims to promote an educational experience that facilitates the other senses through architectural means.

Influenced by the site’s history and landscape, this project intends to emphasise the context within its architectural language. The project’s orientation is based on a historic brick wall’s position on the site. A theme found within site is that the walls indicate their own uses through materiality. The materiality of the facades in the project varies, depending on the use occurring within and around it. Internally, rammed earth reflects natural processes of cocoa like roasting, and brick indicating processed uses like flavouring and moulding. Externally, the projects brick façade emphasises the scientific nature of the ICQC. The rammed earth façade which faces the natural landscape, which has large views of the landscape opened by the third façade: the pitched roof, which reflects the natural topography which the site sits upon.
