The Material Collective Part 1 Project 2024 George Gibson Arts University Bournemouth | UK The Material Collective is a fashion university project in the heart of Bournemouth. Situated in the Winter Gardens. For over a decade the site and its potential have been wasted as a car park. What started as a resort town is now vastly different, and BCP on a wider scale lacks identity. The proposed scheme intends to regenerate the Winter Gardens as well as provide Bournemouth with a fresh fashion culture and architectural anchor within the town. Subcultures of textiles, furniture and product design would grow into the fabric of the university as it expands into the commercial districts of BCP. The plan for the design has been carefully crafted to respect the current green spaces. The form has been carved into the natural shape of the site having undergone layers of experimentation and drafting. The architecture is a transcultural synthesis observing motifs from Bournemouth and the UK, while also implementing design strategies prevalent in the Mediterranean. The project is intended to give back to the community as well as the students, the central catwalk reflecting this with an open public courtyard, allowing people within the town to engage with a new wave of sustainable and wildly experimental fashion.
