Reimagining Ruins: The Ipoh Quarry Experience Part 2 Project 2024 Chin Mann Yuin University of Malaya | Malaysia The "Reimagining Ruins: The Ipoh Quarry Experience" project transformed an abandoned limestone quarry in Gunung Rapat, one of Ipoh's earliest and most significant quarries, had long been depleted but remained connected to the active Gunung Terendum quarry near the North-South Highway by Simpang Pulai. This endeavor aimed to revive and rejuvenate the area, deeply rooted in Ipoh's quarrying history. By integrating the natural topography with innovative architectural elements, the project created immersive spaces that narrated the quarry's rich heritage.Pathways traced historical routes, offering visitors interactive and reflective experiences while highlighting the geomorphic characteristics of the quarry. The design fostered an aesthetic that evolved from the natural surroundings, promoting both sustainability and community engagement.The center provided recreational activities, enabling visitors to connect with nature and fostering an appreciation for the region's natural and cultural heritage. It also enhanced Ipoh's tourism value through educational exhibits, countering the perception of environmental degradation. The project exemplified how thoughtful design could merge history, sustainability, and community, ensuring the quarry's legacy endured for future generations. As a beacon of hope, the Experience Center renewed the spirit of Ipoh’s landscape and heritage, making it a pivotal site for cultural and environmental education.
