Growing Harmony

Part 1 Project 2025

'Growing Harmony' explores how urban architecture can integrate food production to promote healthy, sustainable and community- focused living. The project responds to current challenges in health, nutrition and the environment by proposing a new residential typology in the Western Harbour of Leith, Edinburgh.

At its core is the Food Table, a tool that translates nutritional needs into spatial requirements for growing food. It defines how different cultivation systems—open fields, greenhouses, vertical towers and indoor farms—are spatially woven into the architecture. These elements are directly integrated into circulation areas, winter gardens, courtyards and shared spaces, making food cultivation a visible and accessible part of daily life.

The Leith Development Plan was revised to support this concept at the scale of 12,000 people, introducing local renewable energy systems, car-free mobility supported by public transport and generous green spaces embedded in the neighbourhoods.

Growing Harmony proposes a new model for urban living—where food, architecture and community thrive together. It reimagines the city as a productive, healthy and socially connected environment, offering a hopeful and tangible vision for future development.
