ReFabrication

Part 2 Project 2025

'ReFabrication' addresses socio-economic and environmental challenges linked to consumerism and the second-hand textile industry, prompting a re- evaluation of what constitutes “usable” materials. It explores the potential of existing urban and material resources while recognizing the complexity and innovation inherent in ‘informal living,’ shaped by historical marginalization.

Focusing on the edge condition of Accra, Ghana, the research connects the abstraction during its colonial past to contemporary waste deposition, suggesting new living approaches that tackle both local and global issues. It analyses various system layers to create a conceptual framework for the proposal.

Supported by a collaborative social network that challenges singular authorship, the research incorporates archival colonial mapping, local authors' articles, and discussions with NGOs and traders in Accra, alongside insights from spatial design professionals. The discourse is enriched by theoretical perspectives such as ‘People as Infrastructure’ by AbdouMaliq Simone and ‘Spatializing Justice’ by Fonna Forman and Teddy Cruz.

As an architectural intervention, ‘ReFabrication’ aims to create a counter-narrative for waste textiles and the communities dependent on them. It proposes interventions within the Kantamanto Market Area to promote a bottom-up system for managing textile waste, transforming unwanted materials into building resources that reintegrate into the market and local communities.
