Pentref: Transitional housing for neurodivergent young people

Part 1 Project 2025

In 1967, a groundbreaking shift began when a group of Cardiff University students started a house share, paving the way for modern supported living. This project is inspired by the acts of these students and their refusal to accept the status quo, leading to the closure of many long-stay institutions, exposed for their mistreatment of patients and demanding change to housing for people with additional needs. Today, EYHC finds neurodivergent young people at a higher risk of youth homelessness, disadvantaged by services that aren’t designed for them.

Questioning policy, designs and standards that fail to accommodate for neurodiversity, the project aims to deliver a transitional housing scheme that provides a flexible environment where young people can change and grow at their own pace. Challenging existing housing schemes that provide one-size-fits-all solutions and offer limited flexibility for the changing needs of young people.

The project acts as a village of support, centring the young person and drawing on neighbourhood-inspired spatial organisations from Kinderspital by Herzog & de Meuron. Fictional characters, shaped by the individuality of neurodivergent people, drive spatial and social designs, creating a network of homes and services where young people can develop skills and independence in a supported environment.
