Momentum – A Neo-Hi-Tech Manifesto Part 2 Project 2025 Lee Thackray Northumbria University Newcastle | UK The project concerns the proposal for a new Museum and Innovation centre to be sited at Pottery Lane, Newcastle Upon Tyne. Newcastle City, once an epicentre for engineering, innovation and pioneering Industrial production has experienced an almost complete erasure of its industrial heritage. The new architectural proposal aims to provide a facility to accommodate the contents of the Discovery Industrial Heritage museum in Newcastle whilst also providing adaptable exhibition space, research and education facilities. The past achievements of the City are to be applauded and considered critically within a new state of the art facility, as radical as the arrival of the Centre Pompidou in 1977. The issues of the Anthropocene are to be confronted within the new Innovation centre and Innovation labs which will develop and educate visitors on new sustainable innovations, whilst honouring the site’s historic mixed-use programme.Gleaning inspiration from the pioneering spirit of local 19th Century Innovators and the optimistic architecture and art of the Hi-Tech movement the project attempts to present a mitigation to the Anthropocene, suggesting new architecture and typologies presented through a positive, Utopian optic.
