Urban Rural

Part 1 Project 2025

The rural town of Frome in Somerset has become home to a large number of Londoners in search of space and a better quality of life, with Covid-19 as a catalyst. Like many other towns in the UK, the housing crisis has resulted in ill-fitted dwellings which clash with the town’s identity and community. Urban-Rural questions the correct approach to deliver homes with the high density found in urban areas, while maintaining the rural spirit highlighted in the tight community that is present in rural Frome.

Celebrating the rich historic elements of Frome, six homes targeted for young families are proposed, including a fully wheelchair accessible unit. Each home has street level entrances, open space kitchen-dining-living area, modest size bedrooms and an enclosed community garden. All homes have been tailored to their specific location within the site and enhance the historic views which surrounds the proposal. This project encourages community living, fully responding to the nature of Frome.

Set in Frome’s former abattoir, the proposal is anchored within its historic walls, retained and integrated, while responding to the site’s context. A careful selection of circular and natural materials supports both environmental sustainability as well as the inhabitants well-being.
